THANKSGIVING GREEN VEGETABLE?

Nope, no way, don’t even think about it.

Q. If you had to say, what do you think is the best vegetable to serve with Thanksgiving dinner—barring Brussels sprouts.” Mary B.

A. Mary: If asking only for my own preference, I in fact would choose something like roasted or pan-seared Brussels sprouts, something like this recipe from the NYT. That’s because I myself am a 'Brussels sprout,' my mother having been a Belgian, but also because I like them as the green for Turkey Day.

However, as you suggest, it is not everyone else's favorite. I am making this to bring over to our friends for the Thanksgiving day meal that we will attend because the hosts specifically asked for something non-Brussels sprouts. It is right up your alley, a delicious way with Red Chard.

If I weren't bringing over that, I would do this, the best asparagus recipe I've ever eaten, Edna Lewis’s. I know, asparagus is a spring vegetable, but it's spring in Chile, where we'd get much of it up here nowadays anyway.

Other greens recipes that I favor include Creamed Spinach from the kitchens of Cunard’s Queen Mary 2, a delicious mix of Green Cabbage and Tart Apples, and an Italian turn on zucchini, Concia de Zucchine.

Happy thanksgiving to you, Mary.
